The nice part is there will always be the Games Day Diehards who will always attend just to complain that "last years con was better".

MILITARY WRITERS SOCIETY OF AMERICA ANNOUNCES 2013 BOOK AWARD WINNERS

MILITARY WRITERS SOCIETY OF AMERICA ANNOUNCES 2013 BOOK AWARD WINNERS Submitted by Dwight Zimmerman on September 29, 2013 - 13:50 ZARBUL MASALHA: 151 Afghan Dari Proverbs by active duty U.S. Navy Captain Edward Zellem which won the Gold Medal for Reference was one of the many highlights in the Military Writers Society of America (MWSA) 2013 book awards ceremony held this year in Dayton, Ohio. The MWSA book awards recognize outstanding military-themed books in a wide range of categories from children to adult. The categories include fiction, non-fiction, spiritual/religious, poetry, business/how to, and others. Entries included works published in traditional and e-book formats. Finalists range from first-time authors to New York Times bestselling writers. “The annual awards program is MWSA’s most important and exciting function. We focus on content, style, visual, and technique. Each year more active military, veterans, historians, and bestselling writers submit their works and the rich variety of formats includes novels, poetry, and graphic histories. Each year, the competition is more intense, and 2013 is no exception,” said MWSA president and New York Times bestselling author Dwight Jon Zimmerman. “I am particularly proud of Captain Zellem’s award which received praise from officials in the Afghan government” Zimmerman added, "I also congratulate Author of the Year Bob Doerr, President's Award winner Maria Edwards, and Founder's Award Winner Cathryn Prince. The Author of the Year award recognizes a writer's body of work, and Bob has created an outstanding collection of books that would be an asset to anyone's library. Maria Edwards has been an integral part of MWSA since the beginning, and the organization would not have achieved the success it has without her tireless effort and support. Cathryn Prince's book DEATH IN THE BALTIC highlights the greatest maritime disaster in the world--greater than the sinking of the Titanic--yet one that was almost instantly forgotten in history. Impreccably researched and compellingly written, her book well deserves the Founder's Award." The Military Writers Society of America is an association of more than 800 authors, poets, artists, and photographers whose core principle is a love of the men and women who defend this nation, and an understanding and respect of their sacrifice and dedication. LEGO Lord of the Rings Sets for 2013
2013 LEGO Lord of the Rings pictures
as they were revealed at the Toy Fairs earlier this year (see 2013 LEGO Sets: LEGO Lord of the Rings). Although not officially released yet, two of the LEGO Lord of the Rings summer sets showed up on Kmart’s website. (See the other two at the post linked above.) The listing has been done by mistake and the sets are not available for sale yet, but at least we can take a better look. #79007 LEGO Lord of the Rings Battle at the Black Gate – Fly the Great Eagle high above the Black Gate of Mordor where Aragorn and Gandalf the White must distract the Eye of Sauron. Use them to stage a scene while Frodo Baggins and his friend Sam throw the One Ring into the fiery depths of Mount Doom and destroy it forever. To reach the Ring’s final destination, you must defeat the Mouth of Sauron and the Mordor Orcs positioned high in the spiked gate walls. Then breach the gate and lead the attack on the enemy! Includes a Great Eagle and 5 minifigures: Aragorn, Gandalf the White, Mouth of Sauron, and 2 Mordor Orcs. Price: $59.99 As mentioned in the official description above, the set will include 5 minifigs: Aragorn, Gandalf the White, Mouth of Sauron, and 2 Mordor Orcs. Here is a picture with everything included in the LEGO Lord of the Rings Battle at the Black Gate set. As we discussed before, the eagle is really awesome! (You can click on images for larger view.) Below are a couple of more images with the front and back of the Black Gate. Also, please note that you can combine two of the sets to make a larger, more impressive Black Gate. (Click images for larger view.) #79008 LEGO Lord of the Rings Pirate Ship Ambush – Aragorn gained the help of the King of the Dead and his army of dead soldiers. With their assistance he was able to take over the corsairs of Umbar and used their ships to help Gondor and Rohan. Includes 9 minifigures: Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, King of the Dead, two Soldiers of the Dead, Pirate of Umbar, and two Mordor Orcs. Price: $99.99 As mentioned in the official description above the set will include 9 minifigs: Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, King of the Dead, two Soldiers of the Dead, Pirate of Umbar, and two Mordor Orcs. Here is a picture with everything included in the LEGO Lord of the Rings Pirate Ship Ambush set. A beautiful ship indeed! (You can click on images for larger view.) Below is a different view of the Pirate Ship from the back. I really like the use of those wings and shields to give great detailing of the ship. (Click images for larger view.) The 2013 LEGO Lord of the Rings sets should be available shortly. In the meantime you can check out the currently available LEGO Lord of the Rings and LEGO The Hobbit sets at the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO Hels Deep
Daniel Z built this epic recreation of Helm's Deep from Lord of the Rings. I love the intricate detailing of this set but would never have the patience to build it myself.
Here is a description of the work:
I built this model as a promotional display for a store in Oslo. If you live nearby or visit Oslo you should check it out! The store is called outland and is located next to the main street of Oslo. This is also probably the last MOC you'll see from me the coming months. I will have little time to build and no access to my bricks.
If you recreated a scene from a movie in LEGO, which movie would you choose? I think I would do something from Star Wars.
REH's Hand drawn world Map
Two-Fisted Blogger: Robert E. Howard's Map
REH's own map show were each country was represented on a map of Europe, Asia and northern Africa.
What is amazing is to compare this to the map of Doggerland from 16000 years ago and see how close he came with his fantasy to sceintific reality
..
So fantasy today could turn out to be fact in the future.
